Arc'teryx make high-end gear, as we all know. But for active travel most people want something a little more subtle than the average alpinist-armour. The Beta AR appears to tick that box with toned-down styling, a muted selection of colours and the 'all-round' tag - without sacrificing performance in the form of GoreTex Pro, a helmet-compatible drop-hood and nylon face fabric to ensure longevity.
The addition of nylon is deceiving, as the Beta AR manages to stay very lightweight and packable while keeping the benefit durability. However it does add a level of stiffness that might reduce all-day comfort if you're considering dinner and drinks as part of your day while travelling.
The balance between activity/travel is firmly tipped towards the technical with this model - as you'd expect from Arc'teryx. But of course that kind of versatility always involves a compromise. The travel-friendly features of the Beta AR include subtle colour options, a mid-length cut and drop-hood (which add a little casual-wear styling for when you're off the hill) and good sized pockets (which are sadly out of vogue in highly technical jackets, but essential when travelling).
Where the Beta AR naturally excels in the on the hill. Or on a rainy beach, a snowy mountain, or a windy valley. We've tested it hiking in the UK, and in warmer European climates, and even ski touring; the All-Rounder tag is fully deserved.
The price is high, but the Beta AR genuinely can be your jacket for everything - as long as don't need to dress for dinner.
