Kayaking The Slate Islands, Lake Superior, Northern Ontario, Canada
Located 13km off the North Shore of Lake Superior, the world’s largest fresh water lake, Dave and Deb found that Northern Ontario’s Slate Islands are the perfect destination for a freshwater sea kayaking adventure. As the intrepid pair put it: ‘Home to the densest population of woodland caribou in Ontario, the cutest population of snowshoe hare, plus the world’s largest shatter rock cone on earth, paddling The Slate Islands will keep you occupied for days as you explore within the sheltered safety of the interior passageways.’
Algonquin Park canoe safari: in search of Canada’s Algonquin moose
There’s no better way than spotting Canada’s biggest mammal, the moose, than by canoe, and there’s no better place to do it than in Ontario’s Algonquin Park, which has one of the highest moose population densities in Ontario. Deb and Dave turn off the beeps on their cameras and practice their silent paddle strokes to bring us another beautifully photographed canoeing adventure.
Canoeing under the stars at Manitoulin Island, on Ontario’s Georgian Bay, Lake Huron, Canada
Forming part of the Niagra Escarpment, Manitoulin Island is the largest freshwater island in the world – that’s 2,766km2 of pristine Canadian wilderness to explore, with sheltered lakes like Otter Lake (above) you can explore, even under a moonlit night sky.
Fly-in lodges of Ontario – not just for fishermen
Dave and Deb fulfil a long-time romantic wilderness fantasy by taking a float plane into a remote northern Ontario lodge from Sault Ste Marie. Fishing isn’t really Planet D’s thing but once at the Timberwolf Lodge on Nagagami Lake, even Dave and Deb get hooked on trying to catch their dinner…
White-water rafting on the Ottawa River
The intrepid bloggers take on the world-class rapids of the Ottawa river in Owl Rafting’s big 12-man rafts and small ‘sport’ rafts like the one here, which shows the Dave (at the front right) and Deb (back left) getting a soaking while ‘surfing’.
White-water kayaking course in Barry’s Bay, Ontario
Deb faces head on her fear of being dunked in freezing cold water during this five-day white water kayaking skills course in Barry’s Bay, Ontario, learning wet exits, bow rescues, and low braces.
