Being active while travelling does not mean just a physical challenge, it also means unrivalled access to some of the most exciting places, with exclusive encounters and views that simply aren’t available through a coach window. Here are some of the best trips for those seeking a truly incredible travel experience reserved for the active traveller.
1. Trekking with the Orang-utans in Sumatra, Indonesia
The Gunung Leuser National Park on the untamed island of Sumatra is an adventure lover's paradise of lazy rivers, dense forest, and thrilling hiking routes. It is the perfect place to get acquainted with Sumatra's most beloved natives. Just like tracking chimps or mountain gorillas in East Africa, meeting these incredible creatures in the wild while trekking through their natural environment is definitely something special.
2. Biking with wild animals in Kruger National Park, South Africa
Biking is a great way to experience local life, culture and scenery, and doing it through a savannah with wild animals, camping out underneath the stars, while listening to the sounds of African wilderness, truly takes it to another level. These exclusive bike tours in South Africa´s most famous safari destination are combined with visits to tribal communities for an immersive cultural experience along with true safari action, on a bike.
3. Searching for the perfect beach on a motor scooter, Myanmar
Maybe not that much of a sports activity, but riding a scooter through the countryside of Myanmar definitely requires active spirit and a certain level of fitness. Myanmar, known for its incredible cultural heritage and world famous temples, has much more to offer than classic culture tours. Guided motor scooter tours to the hidden beaches of Dawei Peninsula can be mixed with biking tours or a trek to the Myanmar Himalayas. You will definitely be not just off the beaten track, but far from the crowds.
4. Rafting down the Himalaya, Nepal
Nepal is possibly the world´s best destination for mountain trekking, but that is not all. After the trek or as an adventure of its own, it is definitely worth the effort to head down towards the southern plateau with beautiful culture, jungles full of wild rhinos and oxygen to spare. As most of the roads follow the rivers running down from the mountains it is easy and exciting to cover part of the way on a river raft. This will definitely give a more refreshing ride than any motor vehicle and offers a very different view of the surrounding scenery and local villages.
5. Running the streets of Pyongyang, North Korea
This might sound impossible but it is not. The Pyongyang marathon in the capital of North Korea was opened for foreign amateur runners few years ago. The full marathon has a strict time limit of four hours but a half marathon can be successfully done in up to two and half hours. There is also an option of 10 kilometres that covers the whole route through the city that is filled with incredible monuments and, of course, the local crowd. Everything but the running is easy too: just book yourself in and your agent will handle everything else.
Note: Departure for 2016 marathon tour is on 7th of April and it is open for booking till 5th of March.
