The RNLI is a charity that aims to save lives by changing attitudes and behaviour among people who use the sea regularly. RNLI lifeguards patrol more than 100 beaches in the UK in peak season and assisted almost 10,000 people last year. In 2008 RNLI lifeboats rescued an average of 21 people a day.
Mountain Rescue is a charity run across three different branches in the British Isles working to save lives in wild and remote places and provide advice on how to stay safe in mountain, fell or moorland environments. In 2008 the Mountain Rescue Committee of Scotland assisted with 527 incidents.
