Warming-UpThe beat goes on and on

Music has long been known to encourage us to exercise more. Now a British scientist has shown the right piece of music can actually increase our powers of endurance. The study, published in the US periodical Journal of Sport & Exercise Psychology, examined 30 participants

who ran on a treadmill while listening to rock and pop that included tracks by Queen, the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Madonna. The runners were asked to keep in strict time with the beat. The findings, revealed by lead researcher Dr Costas Karageorghis, show that music – carefully chosen – can enhance endurance by 15 per cent and help exercisers to derive much greater pleasure.
