An interesting development from Vaude, the Rond II at first feels like a cross between a softshell and an insulating layer with a DWR finish.
A closer look though reveals an outer made from Ceplex Advanced which Vaude claims to be fully and permanently waterproof i.e. the waterproofing won't wash out like a DWR treatment can.
So, the jacket is waterproof, nice and soft and is pretty breathable as a result, what about warmth?
The Rond II has a thin layer of Primaloft Eco which is made from 70% recycled materials. Unlike a lot of the other insulating layers on test the Rond II retains its fill with stitching on the inner two layers of the jacket so you don't get that 'puffa jacket' look loved by some and loathed by others! The insulation works well without any noticeable cold spots and being synthetic will still be up to 75% effective when wet.
The Rond II has two front pockets, one of which you can stow the jacket in, an inner chest pocket, and armpit vents with waterproof zips.
The adjustable hood is helmet compatible and the drawcord hem is adjustable through the pockets.
All taken into account the Rond II is a pretty technical jacket, we wouldn't necessarily wear the Pistachio version we have on test out to the bar but the two other, much less zingy colours available in the line-up would definitely make great apres ski jackets that can also be used for serious mountain duties.
