The Spirit Lite is made using Gore-Tex Paclite Plus, this is a more packable, lighter version of Gore but still with the same great quality. The 30 denier material is thick enough to stand up to abrasion against rocks and the odd bit of undergrowth. The general quality of the Spirit Lite jacket is fantastic, in fact, we think that Montane have emerged in recent years as one of the best makers of outdoor clothing in terms of build quality and finish. The cut is slim and flattering, which is a nice change from boxy outdoor jackets, but it does mean you need to ensure you get the right size and may need to size up. Despite being a slim fit there’s still enough coverage over the wrists and bum to feel protected, whether you’re hiking, scrambling, or cycling.
We found the waterproofing particularly good in the Spirit Lite jacket, not just because of the Gore-Tex material but also because the seams are fully taped and all zips are YKK Aquaguard altogether ensuring no rain gets through. Despite being highly waterproof, this jacket still allows your body to breathe on tough ascents, helped by mesh lined hand pockets that can be left open for extra venting. The adjustable hood is excellent, it cinches down onto the head and provides a safe haven from downpours. The chin rises up high and the wired peak channels water away from the face.
Overall we feel this jacket offers a rare blend of light weight, practicality, protection, and durability making it an excellent buy if you’re looking for a long lasting waterproof jacket for hiking and general outdoor use.
