We have reviewed the Vidda Pro Trousers before and they earned an overall score of 10 out of 10. Now Fjallraven have introduced the Vidda Pro Ventilated Trousers, with a little more hiking focus, and added warm-weather versatility.
On paper the new model seems attractive; the original Vidda Pro (and the Barents Pro, which is a slight variation) can be a little too heavy-duty for longer hikes, and are in general more suited to camplife, canoeing, and other slightly more sedentary outdoor pursuits. So the appeal here is obvious. Does the feature-set justify a new purchase?
Well firstly the ventilation is fantastic; no nonsense, long airy vents from knee to hip, with no mesh backing or anything else to impede airflow. Very effective. Equally effective, is a light, stretchy panel in the gusset which adds breathability, aids freedom of movement, and offers something a little more intangible; the weight saving shouldn't really be noticeable while wearing the pants, but there is a genuine feeling of lightness.
Fjallraven promise a slightly slimmer fit compared to other Vidda Pro models, and while that is just about noticeable in the upper portions, it is a shame they haven't narrowed the ankles a little more. The hem has ample adjustment by way of a popper system, but there is so much material to begin with that it ends up ballooning above the cuff. A little irritating to have it flapping around while hiking, but useful for getting over enormous boots.
Another couple of interesting additions include a multi-tool pocket with a securing strap and a large gear loop just under the waistline which is perfect for dropping an axe handle into - bushcrafters will love it!
All in all a genuinely useful variation on a highly successful theme - Vidda Pro fans will love the increased versatility and the new features.
