The Elbe is more of a casual-style waterproof than a serious mountain garment, but it looks great in use and with its ‘Stormsystem’ shell – which is waterproof, windproof and breathable, and has fully taped seams – it will work just fine if you’re caught out in bad weather in the hills.
In fact it even has a level of insulation thanks to a net/taffeta lining, although this does add to the weight. Despite this the Elbe packs away easily, and comes with its own small stuff sac.
The only thing we aren’t too keen on was the fixed hood, which has an elasticated hem and isn’t adjustable; it still fits reasonably well, but it’s not as effective as a fully-adjustable hood in terms of providing good peripheral vision.
On the other hand we do like the comfy and generously-sized microfibre chin/neck guard and the large inner storm flap on the full-length zip. There are also storm flaps on the two zipped hand pockets, and in addition to these you get a small zipped inner pocket. Hems and cuffs are elasticated rather than adjustable.
Overall the Elbe is a very comfortable waterproof that’s ideal for casual wear in all but the coldest months, and at just £70 it’s good value too.
