Named after the first bike Specialized ever made, the Sequoia is sold as a road and touring bike combo, a genre-spanning do-it-all. Equipped with multiple rack, bottle and mudguard mounts it's fully capable of hauling an impressive load if you were to put every option to work. And that premium Cro-Mo steel frame offers up a compliant ride which gobbles up the miles in relative comfort.
We opted for the more expensive Elite build as, not only do you get a significant upgrade in componentry, but you also get the far more advanced Specialized carbon fork, with yet more mounts down each leg for further luggage or bottle cages. The Elite also benefits from a capable and unfussy SRAM Apex 1 1x11 drivetrain, removing the need for a front mech and shifter in one fell swoop as well as sharp-stopping SRAM Apex hydraulic disc brakes.
The finish is a wonderfully retro, plain colour with minimalist graphics which is both understated and attractive. All in all, the Sequoia is a terrifically versatile bike, feeling equally at home on a fast road burst as heading off for the horizon, venturing into the unknown.
Verdict: With 38mm tyres, it's clear Specialized are aiming the Sequoia at road or smooth gravel and if that fits the bill for you, you won't go far wrong.
