BHF Burma Trek

9-18 October, 2015
Join this five-day trek through one of the last unexplored countries in Southeast Asia. You’ll explore on foot from the modern, bustling city of Yangon, with its colonial architecture and the golden Shwedagon Paya pagoda, into the Shan Mountains, past the Pindaya Caves and their 8,000-plus Buddha images, to the stunning Inle Lake, where whole villages are built on stilts – all while raising money for the BHF.

South West Coast Path Challenge

Throughout October
Backed by TV adventurer Monty Halls (see Ask a Local, p87), the Challenge is a world record attempt for the number of times the Coast Path can be walked in a month, raising funds to protect the coastline.

Create your own Challenge distance or join one of four organised 10-mile Challenge events taking place each Saturday throughout October in all four counties that the path passes through.

Cost: £10 registration for individual challenges or £20 for organised walks, plus fundraising target of £30

Go Canoeing Three Lakes Challenge

Any time!
Follow in the wake of Olympic gold medallist Tim Baillie and paddle the longest lakes in Wales, England and Scotland; a total of 43 miles on the water. Taking in the spectacular locations of Llyn Tegid, Windermere and Loch Awe you can set your own time goal, start the challenge when you like, and raise money for a charity of your choice. You’ll need on-water experience though and you’ll have to sort out your own kit and logistics but the locations alone are worth it!

Alder Hey Grand Canyon Trek

1-8 October, 2016
This five-day trekking challenge in the US will take you into the two billion-year-old geological depths of America’s inimitable Grand Canyon. Exploring an ancient Indian trail on foot – while your main luggage is taken on ahead – you’ll see stunning waterfalls, dazzling red rock formations and crystal clear lagoons. Your final night will be spent celebrating your trekking and fundraising achievements in the bright lights of Las Vegas. The trip is organised by experienced challenge operators Global Adventure Challenges, so you’ll be in safe hands.

Action Medical Research’s Cycle Central America

You’ll ride though three countries on this incredible bike tour from Panama City  in Panama, through Costa Rica to Managua in Nicaragua. The route will take you through peaceful and verdant banana and pineapple plantations, take in stunning Caribbean coastal scenery, pass giant smoking volcanoes and climb though primary rainforest. This bike trip of a lifetime covers over 435 km of hot, humid, spectacular scenery in a week, so don’t go unprepared!
