Just three hours from the UK and with a warm, year-round climate, the friendly, English-speaking Maltese islands are the perfect setting for indulging in a wide range of sporting activities, from hiking, cycling, rock-climbing and jeep safaris to sailing, windsurfing, diving and kayaking.
A full calendar of sporting events, including triathlons, marathons, sailing regattas and cycle races, attracts international competitors and spectators. Add to this an incredible, 7,000 year history and the modern, delicious Mediterranean cuisine and you have an irresistible combination.
Walking/Hiking
The mild months from mid-November to March are ideal for walking. From demanding cliff-top hikes to leisurely strolls around charming villages, most of the marked routes take you away from traditional tourist hot-spots. Mellieħa, Dingli, Fawwara, Wardija, all in the north, are well worth exploring, as are the various bays and delightful fishing villages on the southern coast, such as Għar Lapsi.
A 25-minute ferry ride away, the smaller island of Gozo is also a fabulous walking destination with a lot of varied terrain. Ta’ Dbieġi, near San Lawrenz, the Ġurdan Lighthouse near Għasri, Ħondoq ir-Rummien near Qala and San Blas Valley near Nadur are all great walking areas.
Rock Climbing and Abseiling
Whether you love bouldering or sport climbing, traditional climbs or sea-level traverses, the rocky terrain and sheer cliffs that characterise much of the Maltese archipelago offer more than 1,300 rock climbing spots in about 30 different climbing areas. Many of these are easily accessible, and with no seasonal restrictions, climbing is possible all year round.
Cycling and Mountain Biking
Both Malta and Gozo offer unique opportunities to experience a day’s cycling with a difference. The landscape changes with every twist and turn, cycling through the gentle undulating slopes, often with country views and sea views on both sides of the route. There are marked off-road trails and itineraries suitable for all abilities, and stunning road routes with history and culture aplenty.
Family Activities
The Maltese Islands are the perfect backdrop for family outdoor activities. Explore the stunning landscapes by bike or on foot, while older children can enjoy horse riding, rock climbing, abseiling, archery and tennis.
Watersports
There is plenty to keep watersports fans happy. You can gain PADI diving qualifications and dive world renowned wrecks and see an abundence of marine life along the way, or go snorkelling in the clear blue waters of the Mediterranean. Above the waves, learn to sail or windsurf, explore the spectacular coastline by sea kayak, or take to the air by kite surfing or para-kiting. Off the beaches you can also zip over the water on a jet-ski or glide on a wake-board.
