Rugged forests, beautiful wilderness, ancient cities: Sri Lanka has it all. The small nation’s diverse terrain provides an unmissable opportunity for a challenging, once-in-a-lifetime trek.

The only problem is working out where to visit first. Of course, Minneriya National Park is a must-see on any trekking tour of Sri Lanka. An area of dry evergreen forests and grasslands, it offers the magical opportunity to see elephants drink and bathe in their natural habitat.

Sigriya, Dambulla and beyond

You can explore forest trails and take in gorgeous lakes on your way to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Sigirya – an impressive rock fortress that looms 200m over the jungle. From there, it’s just a 12km trek to Dambulla, famed for its fascinating and well-preserved cave temple complex.

You’re sure to enjoy delicious food laden with exotic spices, meet friendly locals, and experience warm hospitality throughout your trip.

Don’t peak too soon

A trip to Kandy, with its medieval Buddhist temples and shrines is a real treat too. But it’s the 2412m climb up one of the country’s most stunning landmarks, Adam’s Peak, which offers the toughest challenge for even a seasoned trekker. It’s also perhaps the most worthwhile. Witnessing the sun rise atop the peak is one of the most spectacular sights you’ll ever encounter.

There’s no better way to experience the delights that Sri Lanka has to offer than through an organised trek. A great way of sharing the experience whilst making new friends, it also ensures you have a safe and stress-free time. Marie Curie are organising Sri Lanka trek events in 2016 to raise funds for people living with a terminal illness. Why not sign up and join their team?
