South Tyrol, Italy’s most Northerly region, is the ultimate outdoor paradise with 300 days of sunshine a year and an incredible fusion of Mediterranean and Alpine cultures.

The region has a stunningly varied landscape ranging from the awe-inspiring Dolomites and Alpine meadows, to vineyards and Mediterranean palms, making it one of the world’s best adventure playgrounds and the perfect summer holiday destination.

Absolutely ideal for every type of activity holiday, the beautiful South Tyrol boasts a vast range of summer activities such as climbing, Nordic walking, hiking, mountain biking, wild swimming, paragliding and even horse riding on indigenous Haflinger ponies – all set against the breath-taking, UNESCO World Heritage Site Dolomite Mountains.

Exploring on foot

South Tyrol offers incredible walking and hiking options for all levels of stamina, from leisurely strolls to challenging trekking tours amid glaciers and Alpine lakes. Nordic Walkers and hikers are in their element in South Tyrol, with its exceptional scenery, eight nature reserves, and 13,000km of natural tracks to explore. The region is even home to the awe-inspiring Alpe di Siusi, a mountain plateau the size of 8,000 football fields and the largest Alpine pasture in Europe. Easily reached by cable car, it is widely known as one of the most striking marvels of the Dolomites and offers 350km of footpaths, tracks and trails.

Those looking for something more adventurous can hike up to and climb the famous via ferrata. Originally used in WW1 to transport people and equipment along the sheer face of the Dolomites, today, hikers can follow in the footsteps of these brave men, and discover the Great War history of this contentious region.

South Tyrol on two wheels

The region enjoys the sunniest mountain bike season in the Alps, with around 4,600 kilometres of cycle trails. Those up for a challenge can cycle the famous Sellaronda – the infamous mountain merry-go-round -  of 58km of fantastic roads, trails and of course, panoramic views.

Those looking to push themselves even harder can take part in the Sellaronda Bike Day race in July, and with an altitude differential between 3,000 and 3,400 metres to be overcome – this is indeed a challenge.

But cycling doesn’t have to be all hard work, and what better way to enjoy a few wine tastings and this lovely area than on a leisurely bike ride? Cycling the South Tyrol Wine Road is a truly memorable experience, and you will pass quaint wine villages with plenty of wineries along the way. The Wine Road itself carries very little traffic and offers three routes to combine cycling, the enjoyment of wine, delicious food and visits to medieval castles.

Working up an appetite

South Tyrol is truly the undiscovered gourmet capital of Italy, with over 20 Michelin Stars, delicious wines and incredible local produce. Refuel in sun-filled mountain huts serving rustic local fare during the day and in the evening, what could be better than enjoying an aperitivo on an elegant piazza? Sip local sparkling wine or a Hugo – an elderflower inspired cocktail - before heading to dinner at one of the region’s fabulous restaurants, serving everything local from Knödel dumplings and Speck to sophisticated Mediterranean dishes.

South Tyrol offers incredible landscapes, exceptional gastronomy and a vast range of activities, perfect for a summer holiday with a unique Italian twist.
