Some may baulk at the price of this softshell from Gore Bike Wear - it isn't even waterproof after all - but after a solid few seasons in the saddle we would happily pay that price and more.
The key to this value is in the versatility. In the colder months we comfortably wear it with just a base layer, adjusting zips to ventilate where necessary. The Windstopper layer prevents draughts penetrating and the small amount of insulation in the fabric just seems to hit a sweet spot for a perfect temperature. Also, although not waterproof, it does shrug off all but persistent showers with ease and dries off extremely quickly.
When the days warm up the sleeves come off after the morning chill, stashed into the back pocket, and the Phantom becomes a plush gilet.
Add all this versatility to a very comfortable, flattering cut, top quality fabric and construction and you have a top you will be wearing for most of the year. Now does £150 seem so unreasonable?
