Update: Fjern Arktis II Hooded Down Jacket review
Fjern's initial launch range has made a clear statement as to their market - the more adventurous and athletic end of the hiking spectrum. The Arktis Hooded Down jacket will appeal to exactly those who will not be stopped by the elements.
The first impression of this jacket was its incredible fit. Of course this is a matter of personal preference, but if you like a snug, athletic fit, the Arktis may be for you. It has a long and trim feel, which adds a little extra warmth around the waist and bum, and a pretty high collar to protect those with long skinny necks! But the tapered sleeves really impressed; rather than baggy cuffs that flap around, the Arktis gives a snug feel all the way to the wrist - which also makes it great for layering.
And although this can be worn alone (it has DWR, naturally, but also Teflon treated water-resistant 750 fill goose down under the ripstop nylon) it is compact and streamlined enough to tuck under a shell if the elements are really having a go.
465 grams in size medium isn't exactly class-leading in the weight-stakes, but I believe that's partly down to a liberal dash of tricot lining - under the chin and also lining the lower stomach area and hand-warmer pockets. They may affect weight, but they add hugely to the comfort. Another minor criticism is the stuff sack pocket - as it has no compression function, the balled-up jacket does tend to take up a little more space than necessary, but is still a small enough package to stow in a pack.
Whether it's the lining or the quality of the down, the most obvious feature of the Arktis is that it is warm. Really warm. Considering the minimal bulk, it seems warmer than it should be, so in terms of value - particularly with regards to versatility - it gets maximum points. A very strong start from a young brand.
