The Abisko Shade trousers are designed for hot weather travellers with as many design features as you care to mention; new lightweight G1000 Air material, rear ventilated yoke, and side zipped vents.
But the genius of Fjallraven's design and construction comes to bear in the overall look; despite all these features (and more) the Abisko Shade model still has a sleek, unassuming look and a smart cut that lends it to all-day use and the versatility needed for travel.
Other active-travel-friendly features include zippered thigh pockets, a minimalist gear loop and a built-in belt (which is fiddly to adjust).
As is the norm for Fjallraven, the fabric and construction are bomber. The G1000 Air material - conscientiously made of recycled polyester and organic cotton - loses weight when compared with burlier versions of the fabric, but still manages a reassuringly robust face which deflects rocks and branches and even dirt to an impressive extent.
It's difficult to assume G1000 Air will be as long-lasting as its heavier cousins, but there is really nothing to suggest otherwise from our short-term testing.
Finally the price; it's possible, of course, to buy cheaper gear and love it, but we often find compromising on price leads to buying again - either because the product fails or simply through dissatisfaction. If you can justify the outlay, you will not regret buying these trousers.
