A long sleeved baselayer is useful for just about every outdoor activity yoiu can think of, and then some. The Velo is made from New Zealand merino wool with a long front zip, gripper elastic at the hem and a small zipped pocket big enough for keys or a phone.
New Zealand merino is beautifully soft and stretchy, and we found it just about the most welcoming and comfortable baselayer we have ever pulled on. Add to that a long zip complimenting the high collar and it becomes very easy to moderate temperature on the move. Zip up for a snug fit on leaving the house, drop it soon after when the heat builds up. Perfect.
Gripper elastic at the rear hem prevents it riding up our back, even with a hydration pack on, and there is a small zipped pocket big enough for a key or similar.
Even after a few days of use on extended overnight trips the smell was kept to a merciful minimum by the natural properties of merino - certainly no bad thing - so it is also a go-to jersey for bivvying or bike packing. A women specific fit is also available, not that women smell of course...
Every now and again you come across a garment you just can't ride without once discovered. This Alpkit merino baselayer falls squarely into that category, with us searching it out for every chilly ride through autumn and winter. We wouldn't write it off for warmer weather either when, used on its own, the open weave allows a cooling breeze through and wicking properties keep the moisture from dwelling too long.
