The Vaude Ice Peak 400 is billed as a technical 3-season mummy sleeping bag with a comfort rating of 1 degrees. Fill is 400 grams of premium 90/10 duck down so the bag has excellent thermal properties although if it gets damp it probably won’t dry as quickly as a synthetic-fill bag might.
The shell is constructed of durable 15D nylon Ripstop and is water repellent, with the head and foot sections having extra waterproofing to protect them from damp tent walls.
The hood opening can be tightened right down to a fist sized hole and the thermal collar around the neck area provides extra protection from the cold should you need it.
There is a small pocket inside the sleeping bag to safely store wallet and mobile phone in and a drawcord at the foot of the bag provides potential extra dry storage space in the form of a handy packsack. The same cord can also shorten the bag providing extra thermal performance for shorter people.
Space inside the Ice Peak 400 is just about perfect for this 6ft 2in tester of slim to athletic build, providing a cossetting envelope of warmth but not feeling too claustrophobic. The inner material feels great next to the skin and it’s reassuring to have the option of cinching the hood tight and attaching the thermal collar to provide vital extra warmth on particularly cold nights.
We tested this bag in the summer in the UK and it proved to be perfect for that use but we can also imagine it being good enough for spring and autumn and even at a push in mild winter conditions with a baselayer set on.
The Ice Peak 400 weighs a kilo and packs down into a pretty small and highly durable stuff sack.
Overall, highly recommended for anything from microadventures to camping with the family.
