We all take our smart phones on our active travels, for their useful outdoors apps, cameras and last but not least the safety and convenience of being able to call or be called - especially in an emergency.
The problems with most smartphones is that these compact gadgets crammed with cutting edge electronic technology aren't in themselves all that adventure ready. It only takes a drop or a soaking (of both if you drop it into deep water) and they are easily broken and rendered useless.
