As long term proponents of the 'phone in a dry bag' approach to protecting our delicate devices when on the move, it was refreshing to use something actually designed for the job. The Ortlieb Safe-It is a simple roll-top closure, sealed flexible case for phones (or other devices, cash or paperwork) that need protecting from the weather.
Available from size small (80x140mm) to XXL (180x250mm) we used a medium which was perfect for a 5-inch smartphone. Once loaded and the closure neatly folded and held in place by the velcro tab, it was a revelation. Gone are the days of feverishly unrolling a drybag to find out who is calling or to check the map; as every single phone function can still be utilised without removing it from its protective case. Calls are clear as a bell, the touch screen works perfectly and we can even take photos through the clear plastic window in the back, they look a little distorted but are perfectly passable for a fun snap.
We use the lash points on all four corners to fix the case to our bar pack, meaning maps can easily be called up and viewed on the move without pocket rummaging and subjecting the phone to rain. In fact, in dodgy weather the touchscreen works better with the case than without as droplets of water don't affect operation.
Verdict: A top accessory for any outdoors adventure, bearing in mind that velcro doesn't last forever.
